About Steven Solomon

Steven Solomon is the #1 rated pianist and vocalist among celebrities, Fortune 500 companies and clients who book Steven again and again for all of life's special moments.

He has entertained thousands of clients at some of the most distinguished venues in the world, among them Symphony Center in Chicago, Disneyland, the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles and Frank Sinatra's Twin Palms Estate.

He began studying piano formally at four and gave his first professional performance at ten. At twenty he made his debut at Carnegie Hall. Trained in both jazz and classical piano, he is an accomplished pianist, vocalist and singer-songwriter, and among the most sought-after event pianists for private celebrations and sophisticated affairs.

From buzz-worthy pop-ups to premiere week activations, Steven delivers custom live performances that enhance brand storytelling and create shareable moments. Trusted by Rolls-Royce, Hulu, La Roche-Posay, National Geographic, and more.

In Los Angeles, Steven performs as Piano By Steven, where he has been one of the city's most in-demand event pianists for years. He keeps studios in both cities and splits his calendar between them. You can visit that site at pianobysteven.com.

Steven Solomon brings elegance you can hear to any special occasion.

Some evenings call for music beneath the conversation, and Steven is content to be the sound of a room rather than its center. The nights guests remember are usually the other kind — someone leans on the piano, names a song from 1962, and within a chorus the whole room is singing it.

Every engagement begins with questions: what the host loves, what the guests love, and what the evening is truly for. The music is built around those answers, with custom arrangements and requests taken live. His ability to hold a conversation without dropping a note is, for many clients, the reason they book him again.

Steven's Story

A Classical Foundation

Steven was four when he started with Julie Lovison at Chicago’s Lake Shore Music Studio, and eighteen when he finally left her. Fourteen years of scales in a North Side studio bought him something most event pianists never get: real classical technique, laid down before he had a taste in music at all. Jazz arrived later and never displaced it. He works in both idioms now, which is why an evening can pass from a Chopin nocturne to a Gershwin standard without anyone noticing the seam.

  • Fourteen years under Julie Lovison, Lake Shore Music Studio
  • Master classes with Ken Chaney, Steve Million and Peter Saxe
  • Study with saxophonist, pianist and educator Diane Ellis

Going Pro at Ten Years Old

The first professional gig, at ten: Eli’s Cheesecake, Chicago.
ABC7’s Someone You Should Know segment with Harry Porterfield.

Most ten-year-olds are made to practice. Steven was booked. The room was Eli’s Cheesecake on the Northwest Side, the fee was small, but it settled a question early, and he has never seriously reopened it. By twelve he was working Chicago’s jazz rooms on school nights — a standing residency he held until he left for university, carrying a selective-enrollment course load the whole time.

  • Northside College Prep, Chicago
  • Jazz Institute of Chicago Kiewit-Wang Mentorship Award — one of three high-school jazz musicians chosen that year
  • Louis Armstrong Jazz Award and Cedric Hampton Music Award

Formally Educated in Jazz and Classical Piano

At Western Illinois University, on a full four-year Trustee Scholarship, Steven read both piano traditions at once — jazz under Dr. Michael Stryker, classical under Dr. Tammie Walker — while studying voice with Professor Kitty Karn. He graduated summa cum laude in Music Education. That dual training is unusual among event pianists, and it is the practical reason he can take almost any request in almost any key, and move from a Chopin nocturne to a Gershwin standard without anyone noticing the seam.

  • Summa cum laude and Honors Graduate, School of Fine Arts and Communications
  • Full four-year Trustee Scholarship and the Ann Collins Jazz Piano Scholarship
  • Voice with Professor Kitty Karn

Carnegie Hall Debut

Carnegie Hall, May 30, 2010 — the Stern Auditorium.

The Stern Auditorium, on the Ronald Perelman Stage, at twenty years old. Nobody forgets the walk from the wing to the bench in that room. It reset his sense of what a performance owes an audience, and every room since — ballroom, terrace, living room — has been held to the standard set that night.

  • Symphony Center, Chicago — six appearances
  • Pritzker Pavilion, Millennium Park; the Green Mill; the Chicago Jazz Festival

Laurel Canyon

Steven moved into Laurel Canyon, the eucalyptus-choked canyon above the Sunset Strip where Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Jackson Browne wrote the most durable decade in American songwriting — his place sitting just below the house where King shot the cover of Tapestry. It is a strange, quiet pocket of a loud city: coyotes at dusk, no sidewalks, and a peculiar hush after dark. He walked it most nights. Much of what he plays now was worked out on those walks and finished at the piano when he got home. From that canyon he built a career as pianist to the stars one review at a time, treating every engagement with the highest level of discretion and professionalism.

  • Hotel Bel-Air, The Beverly Hills Hotel, Spago, Disneyland
  • Frank Sinatra’s Twin Palms Estate and the Liberace Museum
  • Activations for Rolls-Royce, Hulu, La Roche-Posay and National Geographic
  • Artist in Residence, Lyon College — jazz improvisation master class and solo concert

Sweet Home Chicago

The city he learned to play in is the city he came back to. Steven now divides his time between Los Angeles and Chicago with his wife and son, keeping a recording studio in each and traveling internationally wherever the next engagement calls. Both are home; neither is a former address. What Chicago gets is a hometown pianist who spent two decades in Hollywood’s most exacting rooms and brought the standard back with him.

  • Shared the stand with Willie Pickens, Bobby Watson, GRAMMY® winner John Clayton, Dee Alexander and Mark Colby
  • Performed for Mayor Richard Daley and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White
  • Corporate engagements for McDonald’s, Boeing, Kraft, American Girl and Chase
  • Multi-instrumentalist, arranger and quick-study sight reader

Chicago heritage

Three generations of North Siders.

Steven’s grandfather settled on the North Side in 1956, and three generations of the family live there still.

Steven was educated in the city’s selective-enrollment public schools, graduating from Northside College Prep, and has appeared on the stage at Symphony Center half a dozen times, and at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, the Green Mill, the Jazz Showcase and the Chicago Jazz Festival in Grant Park. Steven and his wife are raising their son in Chicagoland, where they are both from.

Why Clients Choose Steven

Steven is among the most highly regarded event pianists in Chicago and Los Angeles, and most of his calendar comes from clients booking him again and from the planners, chefs and venues who recommend him.

Audience Experience

As an attendee of my performance, you'll be treated to a musical journey finely tuned to suit your event's needs. If you want to start with some ambient background music and later transition into sing-a-longs with guests, this is where I shine. Need someone to play that song that only you and your loved ones know? I'll learn it in advance of the event and play it during your event. With an expansive repertoire that spans every genre, decade, and vibe, I am here to make your event enjoyable and the behind-the-scenes logistics a breeze. I strive to make your event truly catered to your musical needs and tastes.

Performance Duration

For most events, expect uninterrupted music with short breaks, usually only after every 90 minutes or so of playing (note that most musicians play 45 minutes and then take a 15-minute break). I normally do not follow that “standard,” and this ensures that your event remains lively and melodious, giving you more live music playing time during your event. When on a short break, I am happy to play pre-recorded music so you have wall-to-wall music during your event.

Communication

I prioritize seamless communication, both before and after your event. I can be reached at any time in any way you like. Whether you prefer text, email, or calls, I adapt to your preferences, ensuring clarity and prompt responses.

Flexibility

Day-of adjustments? No problem. I pride myself on being adaptable catering to on-the-spot changes or special requests. Thus ensuring the event's flow remains undisturbed. I happily “go with the flow.”

Discretion

For those requiring an additional layer of confidentiality, especially high-profile clients, I'm comfortable and familiar with and happily sign NDAs. Discretion and your privacy are of the highest importance to me, for all my clients, celebrity or not.

Collaboration

I believe in collaborative efforts. Whether you're an individual, event planner, the personal assistant to a celebrity, or representing a corporation, you can expect a harmonious partnership underlined by professionalism and a personal touch catering to you and/or your client's needs.
